Brooklyn, NY, April 22, 2024. As a proud advocate for environmental sustainability, SproutVideo is delighted to celebrate eight years of enthusiastic commitment to preserving and restoring our nation’s forests. Since 2016, SproutVideo has partnered with the National Forest Foundation (NFF) to contribute toward planting trees and conserving vital ecosystems across the United States.

“A single tree in one year produces roughly 260 pounds of oxygen. It’s difficult to quantify this impact, but we know by helping plant thousands of trees, we’re contributing to the health of ecosystems and populations worldwide. We are immensely proud to celebrate eight years of partnership with the National Forest Foundation.”
— Adam Podolnick, CEO, SproutVideo

From the SproutVideo Earth Day Video Archive

Through SproutVideo’s enduring collaboration with the NFF, they have made significant strides in replenishing and safeguarding natural landscapes. Their ongoing contributions have facilitated the planting of thousands of trees, accounting for 3M+ pounds of new oxygen. The environmental impact fosters biodiversity, mitigates climate change, and enhances community recreational opportunities.

“On behalf of the National Forest Foundation (NFF), I extend heartfelt gratitude to Sprout Video for their unwavering commitment as stewards of the environment through NFF’s Sapling Program. Since our partnership began in 2016, SproutVideo has exemplified dedication by planting an impressive 11,300 trees! Through their support for planting trees, SproutVideo contributes to cleaner air and water, fosters improved wildlife habitat, and enhances biodiversity. Thank you for being a vital force in this mission to restore and protect these treasured places!”
— Abby Schembra, National Forest Foundation Reforestation Team

SproutVideo’s dedication to environmental stewardship extends beyond monetary donations. A core company value is minimizing its environmental impact and doing what’s best to protect nature. Over the years, SproutVideo has encouraged commuting via public transportation, remote work, reducing paper waste, recycling, and making easy everyday changes, like using rechargeable batteries in the offices. Employees have actively engaged in tree planting, sustainable agriculture, organic pest control, drip irrigation, composting, recycling, and creating pollen-rich environments for bees and other pollinators.

“Coming from Chicago, where it’s too cold to put anything outside before May, I can garden 9 months out of the year by starting my growing season from seeds. Not only am I trying to grow what I eat, but I’m also trying to find the right companion plants to encourage a healthy ecosystem of insects. Once warm enough, I transplant my seedlings to my rooftop garden, my personal oasis in the city.”
— Joyce Yee, Sr. Software Engineer.

What can you do when you need to produce a video, but you don’t have the time or resources to shoot original footage? Enter the wonderful world of stock video. While this is usually used to fill in the gaps of original content, you can create fully fleshed out videos in no time, with the help of some creativity and planning.

This post will walk you through the steps needed to take some stock clips you find on the internet and turn them into a marketing masterpiece.

The process we’re outlining below is the same process we used in our most recent video revolving around the 4th of July. You can watch that video below.

What is Stock Footage?

Stock footage, also referred to as stock video or B-roll, is a piece of video content that you typically use in conjunction with your main footage in larger video production. You can find these on websites for free or for sale, which we’ll cover later on.

This video content could be outtake footage, extra footage, or various other types of generic footage that creators have uploaded to various stock sites. In addition, many creators are now purposely creating generic footage to upload for the purpose of selling. Because of their nature, it becomes easier for filmmakers to find these clips and incorporate them into their projects.

Typically, you would use clips to fill in gaps when you don’t have actual footage to connect the pieces of your story. In our case, we wanted to challenge ourselves by only using stock footage for the whole piece. This is a great option for anyone who wants to create videos, but may not have the time or resources to shoot it all themselves.

Ideation of Your Video

Just like with any video, it all begins by brainstorming a concept. This is even more important when working with only stock footage since you’ll have to take into account the potential limitations of finding clips that work for the video you’re creating. For example, with our video above, we wanted to reinforce the idea of enjoying your holiday weekend — a simple concept, but one that can be accomplished quickly and will keep viewers interested.

Once you have your idea, you’ll need to flesh out some of the finer details. Will you need graphic treatments, overlays, titles, or a voiceover? Early in the creation process is the best time to sort out which elements you’ll need to make your video complete.

At this time, you may also want to outline or write out a script. Once your ideas are organized, it’ll make searching for clips that fit your narrative much easier.

Where to Find Stock Footage

When it comes to finding quality stock footage, there are two different routes you can take: paid or free. Each has its pros and cons which we’ll outline below.

Free Stock Footage

The main benefit of free stock footage is that it costs nothing. Videographers submit their work to various free stock sites as a way of getting their name out there, and you get to use their videos completely free of charge.

Years ago, much of the free stock footage libraries had few options with low quality. In more recent years, however, a lot of the footage you find may feel more natural or conceptual, giving you more unique options for your project. Of course, you’re bound to find extremely “stocky” footage no matter where you look.

Our top three free stock video sites include: Pixabay, Pexels, and Videvo.

Paid Stock Footage

Paid footage doesn’t necessarily mean the quality will be better but, in a lot of cases, it might be. You’ll most likely find more polished content and a wider variety of options than you would with free options. Plus, since the individual videographers are incentivized to upload, their libraries may be larger, giving you more options for a cohesive look when picking footage. One thing is for sure: with paid stock sites, you’re much more likely to find higher-resolution options relative to free sites.

When it comes to paying for the footage, there are typically two different avenues you can go: pay per video, or subscription-based. If you’re doing a one-off project, paying per video clip may be the way to go. Be sure to double-check the usage rights, which will vary depending on your intended use. Additionally, prices may vary depending on the video quality of the footage you’re downloading.

When it comes to subscription-based sites, you typically would pay a yearly or monthly fee that gives you access to downloading a certain amount of videos per month. This usually offers different price tiers for different video quality, but may be a good cost-effective solution for those using a lot of stock footage.

Some of our favorite paid stock sites include: Shutterstock, Storyblocks, and Dissolve.

How to Search for Stock Footage

To put it bluntly, there is a lot of bad stock footage out there. And when we say bad, we mean it’s too … stocky. The footage you want to find has to be unique enough and high quality enough that those who see your videos second guess if it’s a stock clip or not. So for that reason, searching for high-quality footage that works for your project may be a time-consuming process.

Luckily, if you already created an outline for your video, you’ll already have the specifics in mind to search in an efficient manner. Follow these tips to make this process a bit quicker.

1. Be Very Specific

If you search generic terms like “office” or “video”, you’ll get generic results. Try making your search as specific as possible. You’ll get fewer results but, ideally, they will be more in line with your vision.

2. Utilize Common Associations

While you can find a lot of different types of content on stock video sites, you’re bound to run into an idea that you can’t quite find the correct clip for. When this happens, you can pivot and search clips that represent the idea you’re trying to get across. For example, if you want a clip that represents love, you could use a clip of two people kissing. Viewers are very good at making connections through imagery.

3. Use All of the Filters

Many of the stock sites we mentioned above have filters you can implement to narrow your search. Use as many as applicable. Similar to being very specific in your search, using filters will give you fewer results, but they will be much more in line with your project outline.

4. Explore Clips from the Same Creator

Depending on your project, it may be useful to find more clips from the same creator. Typically, when someone is uploading stock footage to one of these sites, they’ll have a whole series of clips from the same shoot or scene, covering different angles, setups, or takes. If your goal is to have a cohesive video, utilizing clips from the same filmmaker will help create that illusion.

5. Try it Out

When in doubt, download the clip and try it in your edit. While some clips will give you an immediate sense that they will work in your sequence, other clips may be a bit more difficult to judge. Whether you’re searching free or paid sites, it’s easy to download and test as many clips as you need. For our video above, we downloaded over 30 clips and used the best 14.

Putting It All Together

At this point, you’ll have your idea, outline, and stock footage ready to come together into a final product. You’ll most likely need to do some trial and error to find out exactly what works best for your final edit. Additionally, you’ll absolutely need a great soundtrack to help bring your project together. For tips on finding the right song for your video, explore our post on finding music.

Creating a video with just stock footage can be a challenging task, but it certainly isn’t impossible. With proper planning and an effective search method, you’ll be able to create a cohesive story that will hopefully have your audience second-guessing who actually shot these clips. Let us know in the comments below what tips you have for finding great stock footage.

We are headed for a very strange holiday season. As the world is still grappling with COVID-19, we can expect some unique situations when it comes to celebrating the holidays with our friends and family.

However, one thing has stayed consistent this year: an outpouring of holiday-themed commercials from the world’s biggest brands. Some ignore our current situation completely, others dazzle with special effects, while others lean into the pandemic head-on to build their story.

In this post, we’ll be reviewing a few that we believe have just the right amount of holiday spirit that you can use to inspire your own videos.

Effects of the Pandemic

While video can often provide a welcome escape from our current realities, relatable stories will almost always hit home. This is exactly what Amazon is capitalizing on in their holiday spot, ‘The Show Must Go On.’

This concept works well because it dives headfirst into something that is on everyone’s mind and wraps a heartfelt story around it. Instead of focusing on pitching products, it focuses on the story of overcoming a tough situation. They also include an, oh, so subtle touch of ‘boy meets girl’ as a way of justifying the young gentlemen making an Amazon purchase of a spotlight. This little detail is great product placement because it also helps to complete the journey.

Garnering an emotional reaction from the viewer is generally a foolproof way to produce a hit when it comes to holiday videos, or even videos in general. Emotions are key to motivating viewers to take action, whether it’s share, comment, or buy. It doesn’t really matter what time of year it is. To learn more about using emotions in your videos, explore our post on the science behind emotional videos.

The Power of the Right Spokesperson

While this might not be obtainable for most companies, bringing in a heavy-hitting celebrity or thought leader in your space is a great way to push your message and build trust in your product or brand. SodaStream went with a huge celebrity for their spot called ‘The Small Things’ by enlisting help from Snoop Dogg.

Instead of pushing the narrative using a strictly SodaStream theme, they lean into the humor that surrounds Snoop Dogg’s personality. This ad certainly would not have worked with just anyone: Snoop Dogg is the star.

Still, they packed a lot into this 60-second spot. They pitch the product, subtly address COVID-19, and promote environmental causes. While the latter may seem a bit of a stretch for a sparkling water company, it’s likely to resonate with environmentally conscious millennial consumers.

This works well because many people absolutely love seeing a familiar face in advertising. Celebrity endorsements are one of the oldest and most used forms of advertising for the simple fact that people form deep connections with celebrities, even if they’ve never met them before. From this, it’s an easy jump to trust them when they are promoting a product or service.

One thing to note is that the feeling goes both ways. If people love your spokesperson, the ad will resonate. However, if feelings change because of a scandal or misconduct, you can assume it’ll have a negative effect on your business.

Going for Gold

Our next example takes elements of the Amazon and SodaStream advertisements above, and ups the ante. Xfinity addresses the struggles of 2020, and they have a familiar face as the lead in Steve Carrell playing Santa himself. “The Greatest Gift” puts Santa and his elves in our shoes, adjusting to one of the most bizarre years to date.

Where this video holds its own is the hilarious and heartwarming parallels to our “new normal.” Zoom calls with co-workers, working from home, frustrations when rethinking business strategy: all things many of us can relate to.

Seeing Santa, one of the most beloved characters of all time, deal with the stress of this year’s events humanizes him in a way that will bring a smile to your face. The relatable jokes pile up over the course of the video, and end on an endearing note that wraps this video up like a Christmas present.

Unlike the example with Snoop Dogg and SodaStream, Steve Carrell isn’t the entirety of the video’s focus. His star power certainly enhances it, but he is just part of a bigger story that unfolds throughout.

The length of this video is important to point out as well. Typically, advertisements are 30-60 seconds. This ad is over three minutes long. Instead of trying to shove the full story into a small box, Xfinity chooses to go for a longer-form ad to help the story unfold naturally. This allows plenty of time to build on jokes, as well as time to explore the depths of the problem they ultimately end up solving.

Typically a lot of video creators may shy away from longer ads but this proves that with the right story, it may be worth the extra minutes. If you decide to go with a long-form holiday video, look at our post on ways to use it to generate multiple marketing assets to get the most out of your efforts.

Get Extremely Creative

In general, when it comes to luxury advertising, anything goes. This can result in some insanely unique advertisements. Burberry takes creative freedom to a new level with their video, ‘Singing In The Rain.’

This holiday video starts off very subtly, then explodes into a choreographed masterpiece. The stars of the show are four young dancers, draped head to toe in Burberry. They take to the streets, seamlessly dancing whilst playing off each other and interacting with enormous hail stones.

The creative decisions of this film make it really stand out. For instance, remixing a familiar song helps set the wintry tone. Most of the video is shot from relatively close vantage points to build excitement while the dancers progress down the street. However, ending with some dramatic wide shots help bring the performance home in epic style.

The lesson here is one that can be borrowed from many luxury advertisements: don’t be afraid to let the creative juices flow. This ad works so well because it mystifies the audience and creates a world of wonder. It really stands out from the crowd of other holiday videos because the concept is so artistic. While tried and true methods are important, thinking outside the box every now and then can really pay off.

Connecting Your Video to a Bigger Initiative

Without a doubt, John Lewis is the holiday ad heavy-weight champ. Each year, they spend millions of dollars crafting a story that melts the hearts of those around the world. We even did an analysis of their previous holiday ads to highlight what can be learned from their past successes. This year is no different, with their ‘Give a Little Love’ spot already earning millions of views.

This video does a great job of spreading some holiday cheer whilst presenting a beautiful ad. They enlisted the help of nearly a dozen different designers and specialists to help create one of the most unique ads out there.

However, what they do better than most is expanding the concept into a full campaign. Earlier this year, John Lewis was unsure if they would even create their annual holiday ad, but then decided to use it as an opportunity to create awareness for their charity partners. Considering how many people are in need of some kind of assistance this year, the whole ad is essentially an awareness piece for their ‘Give a Little Love’ charity initiative.

On a dedicated landing page, you can learn about all the ways John Lewis is giving back this year. The thoughtful campaign includes donations for every purchase at John Lewis, a number you can text to donate, physical installations in stores, a page to read about the video production process, and merchandise where all proceeds will be donated to families in need. Pushing the video and these messages through social media also helps round out the campaign and reach as many people as possible.

By making their video part of a much greater whole, John Lewis really exemplifying the spirit of giving around the holidays. Think of ways you can tie your videos to larger initiatives, or other elements you can incorporate beyond video that will complete your campaign.

This year has been tough. Many people haven’t been able to see friends and family, and many lost jobs or loved ones.

We’ve spent a lot of time reflecting on everything we’ve learned and experienced this year, and while there’s a lot to lament, there’s also a lot to be grateful for. In honor of Thanksgiving, we’re exploring and sharing our gratitude in this post.

What Are We Thankful For?

While we are thankful for lots of things, we felt the following deserved a special shout-out.

Essential Workers

First and foremost, we thank essential workers from the bottom of our hearts. While we always have a lot of esteem for those who work tirelessly in service of others, our admiration and respect skyrocketed during this year.

Not only did they have to deal with their own emotions, struggles, and issues, but they selflessly dealt with all of ours as well. Doctors, nurses, first responders, pharmacy employees, teachers, and those working in food and other essential industries, we thank you!

Our Customers

As a video hosting platform, we work with customers from a very wide range of industries. It’s been truly inspiring to see how video has helped many adapt to the new normal of remote work.

We are extremely grateful for every single one of our customers. We could not do any of this without you. Whether you’re new, or have been with us for years, thank you!

Live Video/Video Chats

Live video and video chatting have been a huge part of our professional and private lives this year. On the personal side of things, we couldn’t tell you the number of video chats we’ve done on evenings and weekends with those we can’t see in person. Live video always makes remote communications more fun and more personal, and we are grateful to be alive in a time where technology makes it possible.

And on the professional side of things, we launched the first iteration of our live streaming features earlier this year, and it’s been amazing to see so many companies use it to creatively keep their businesses going during the pandemic. We’ve had a back-stage peek at theater companies using live video to reach their audience, fitness instructors streaming classes to help their clients stay healthy, and a surprising number of other businesses quickly adopt it as part of their marketing and business practices.

Online Video

Admittedly, we’re a bit biased since online video is the core of our business, but it seems just about everyone has benefited from online video during this time. Whether it was a phenomenon like Tiger King back in March, or watching the presidential debates in the fall, it’s safe to assume our video consumption habits have increased this year, and we are 100% okay with that.

Video has a special quality of transporting you out of the present and into a different experience. With a year like this, that was exactly what so many of us needed.

The Human Spirit

In a year where just getting out of bed is an accomplishment, we’re incredibly grateful for the resiliency of the human spirit. If nothing else, this year has taught us that even when the world throws tragedy after tragedy at you, we can still come out of it standing.

We also saw this in the overwhelming number of people who selflessly continued doing things for others during this time. From COVID-relief funds, to people getting groceries for their elderly neighbors, it’s inspiring to see people step up.

Friends and Family

Many of us here and around the country couldn’t be with our friends and family in person for most of the year. However, that didn’t stop us from leaning on them for support. Having good people around us physically and virtually has been the gift that keeps giving.

It is interesting that even from afar, relationships can strengthen and deepen. Whether that’s texting, calling, messaging co-workers on Slack, or video chatting as mentioned before, our friends and family have been our rock throughout this year.

The City of New York

New York is the city SproutVideo calls home. While you may have heard stories about the city being “dead,” or that it will never recover from 2020, we’d beg to differ. One of the main reasons so many people move to New York, ourselves included, is for its grittiness and resilience.

Make no mistake, this has been a very tough time. An unfortunate number of small businesses and restaurants have closed their doors, and won’t be able to reopen. But, the city will bounce back.

Adapting to changing situations is what we do best. Whether that is ordering way too much food to support local restaurants, cheering on essential workers, or watching the city transform the streets to accommodate outdoor seating, we will find a way to make it work. NYC might be a bit less crowded at the moment, but the future is brighter because of those determined to stay, and we’re forever grateful for that.

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone. Stay safe these holidays so we can all toast extra hard this New Year’s when we get to put 2020 behind us.

Don’t be a stranger; let us know what you’re thankful for this year.

Year after year, one British retailer sets the standard for emotional storytelling in their Christmas ads. That’s right, we’re talking about John Lewis, the reigning champion of heartwarming, tear-jerking holiday campaigns.

But don’t take our word for whether or not they’re truly the leaders in the holiday ad race – just check the millions of views they’ve racked up every year for over a decade. That type of repeated, viral success is very hard to execute.

In this post, we’ll be breaking down the six aspects of the John Lewis Christmas videos that drive their virality, with takeaways for replicating these strategies in your own videos.

Their ad for 2019 is a shining example of what John Lewis has perfected over the years. The story revolves around a dragon that gets a bit too excited and a friend that is determined to help.

Staying true to form, this video features little to no dialogue, great music, a relatable story, and minimal marketing. These elements are paramount to the success of these John Lewis videos and this year continues the tradition.

No Dialogue

For just about all the John Lewis Christmas ads, there has been minimal or absolutely no words throughout. The whole story is told through compelling visuals. This means each scene is that much more important since the story is so visual. This technique is especially important in today’s world. For example, 85% of videos on Facebook are played without sound.

In the 2014 John Lewis ad “Monty the Penguin”, they use visual cues and very noticeable body language to make their point. It is very clear what the penguin is longing for, and the boy in the film finally understands just in time for the perfect Christmas present.

This type of video is powerful for many reasons, and with the right planning, you can create your own. We’ve produced our very own “silent” film and broke down in detail all the elements to make your film resonate with the audience in our guide to producing a compelling video without dialogue.

Music That Moves You

In addition to the powerful visuals in these videos, the music also plays an incredibly important factor in their success. I think we can all agree that without music, visuals for films wouldn’t have the same effect. Think about the stressful music in a horror film; it wouldn’t work as well with a happy, blissful score.

The same applies to these John Lewis Christmas videos. We think each song is specifically chosen for one or two reasons. First, it is warm and inviting. This allows the viewer to take in the message and isn’t distracting. The wrong track might ruin your message.

Secondly, some of the advertisements feature a cover version of well-loved songs. John Lewis specifically uses tracks that you probably have heard before; that makes the film feel familiar. In 2018 they featured “Your Song” by Sir Elton John, and he also appeared in the ad.

While many of us can’t afford custom licensed cover versions of hit pop songs, we’d still suggest taking the time to find music from the right source. In an upcoming blog post, we’ll be covering how and where to find the right music. Sign up for our newsletter to stay in the loop.

Highly Relatable Storylines

An easy trend to spot in these ads is their focus on the ones we love. One of the biggest themes throughout all 13 Christmas videos is the idea that giving a loved one a present is the best part of Christmas – whether it’s a mother to her child, a monster to their friend, or a snowman to his love. Wanting to give the right gift is something almost everyone can relate to, and that is why this theme has worked so well over the years.

In 2012, John Lewis created “The Journey”. This ad hints on the trials and tribulations we sometimes go through to get the perfect gift. So many people take pride in finding the right present for a loved one and will stop at nothing until they can find it. The snowman in this film does just that, traversing rivers, mountains, and snowball fights to deliver the best gift.

For John Lewis, getting people to buy presents at their stores is one goal of these videos, and the gift-giving theme will hopefully get people in the mood to go shopping.

Start with brainstorming ideas that you know people can relate to. From there, see if you can tie it to your business. We did this recently with a Thanksgiving video. Food is something everyone can relate to, so we made a tutorial on how to film food properly.

Simple Marketing

This is a small-but-important point. While yes, these videos are of course an advertisement for John Lewis, they don’t feel like it. Throughout almost every video there is very little branding or obvious cues that this is connected to John Lewis at all – just a simple tagline at the end. Each year’s video is a whole new story, but the simple taglines stay relatively consistent.

“The Man on the Moon”, the John Lewis Christmas Video from 2015, ends with the simple tagline, “Show someone they’re loved this Christmas”. It refers to the video’s plotline – a young girl trying her best to communicate with a man living alone on the moon – but it’s also universal.

Other tags throughout the years include, “show them how much you care,” “some gifts are more than just a gift,” and “for gifts that brighten their world.”

Having minimal marketing messages lets the story and visuals do the heavy lifting. They provide entertainment for the viewer. These simple tags reinforce the story while strengthening the idea that John Lewis is a place you can find that gift for your loved ones. If you have a great story to show through video, this technique is an easy one to apply to any video.

Expanding Beyond the Video

While the last point mentioned simple marketing within the video, this point explains how to capitalize on that outside of it. In several of the more recent Christmas advertisements, John Lewis has introduced a new way to increase awareness of their product. The characters Moz the Monster, Monty the Penguin, and this year’s Excitable Edgar all launched with accompanying hashtags, landing pages, and physical toys. These little extras not only increase engagement digitally, but also get people into the physical stores to experience the Christmas magic for themselves.

Moz the Monster of the 2017 John Lewis ad fully capitalized on this idea. The video was extremely well received and the merchandise was plentiful. John Lewis sold plush toys, books, mugs, pajama sets, slippers, and more all in connection to the friendly monster.

You don’t have to create a physical product to capitalize on this tactic. Expanding the story you create through a branded hashtag is a great place to start. Use that hashtag with anything related to your feature video and come up with ways to keep people engaged. That engagement could be: a poll on Twitter, giveaways on Instagram, or sign up bonuses on your website. This is a great opportunity to be very creative when it comes to expanding the message beyond the video.

More Than Just a Video Advertisement

Whether by chance or an amazing long-term marketing goal, John Lewis Christmas videos have risen above and beyond being just another video advertisement. One of the biggest reasons for their success is the sheer amount of people that anticipate the film each year.

In the UK, some would say the holiday season can’t begin until the John Lewis ad is released. Each year, millions watch the film, buy the merch, and talk about it with colleagues, friends, and family.

Unfortunately, this is not something you can replicate overnight. If the folks at John Lewis stopped after the first or second year they never would have risen to the level they are at now; their lesson is to stick with whatever project you’re doing. If you’ve received a good response from a recurring project, keep doing it; with time, it could grow to be something monumental.

Procrastination is something that just about everyone can relate to. Maybe it was putting off school projects or waiting until the last minute to go Christmas shopping, but we’ve all been there.

We won’t tell your boss, but we know this applies to work as well. For whatever reason, if you were planning on making a Thanksgiving video, but haven’t started yet, we’ve got you covered.

Below are five quick Thanksgiving video ideas you can create at the last minute.

Absolute Last-Minute Videos

These first few video concepts are the easiest videos to make. Each example could be completed within a few hours at the most. All you’ll need is a camera, some of the people in your office, and one of these ideas.

1. The “Happy Thanksgiving” Video

The basic “Happy Thanksgiving” video might be the fastest and simplest to create. This is exactly what it sounds like: wishing your customers a Happy Thanksgiving.

This no-frills video can be done in different ways to make it stand out. For instance, Sur La Table created a simple adaptation of this video with their staff. They had each person share stories about the importance of being around the table for Thanksgiving.

This video concept doesn’t require any fancy graphics or animation, since the authentic message is the central focus. It also doesn’t need an elaborate setup. The participants are simply filmed in their work environments in everyday attire. If you go this route, be sure to use our guide to getting flattering lighting in an office environment.

The low-effort production combined with a high-impact message makes this one of the best last-minute Thanksgiving videos you could produce.

2. The Favorite Recipe Video

Food is one of the most important parts of Thanksgiving, so why not capitalize on it? Ask just about anyone in the office and surely they will have a favorite Thanksgiving dish to share. If some folks don’t celebrate Thanksgiving, invite them to contribute seasonal ideas from their family traditions instead.

This Thanksgiving video featuring celebrities talking about their favorite dishes. Replace the celebrities with your coworkers, and that’s your video.

Even though CBS News probably had more resources available, but this video is simply multiple interviews cut together to create a short compilation. If the message is good, it doesn’t need to be fancy.

3. The Classic ‘Thank You’ Video

Naturally, giving thanks is also a major part of Thanksgiving. You can use this opportunity to put together a short video thanking those who have helped your business. This is the perfect time to thank your customers, community, or anyone that comes to mind.

NASA executed this video 260 miles above the earth by featuring two astronauts sharing what they’re thankful for. They take the time to thank all those that contributed to their mission and the international space station.

Luckily, you don’t need to be in space to recreate this simple video. Find a few coworkers willing to appear on camera to share what they’re thankful for, and your video is good to go.

When You Have a Bit More Time

The following videos are suitable for companies that already make videos on a regular basis. These concepts are a bit more involved, and will require some planning, better equipment, and a tad more time.

4. The Thanksgiving Video Sketch

If you or your team have a knack for comedy, making a short sketch video could be a hit. For instance, you could highlight some of the finer points we all love to hate about family Thanksgiving meals. This is bound to give your viewers a good laugh.

Ellen did this very well in the clip below. Her skit is based on the idea that family dysfunction is as prevalent at Thanksgiving as the turkey. Similar to the other examples, this seasonal topic is something many people can relate to, and this time with a laugh.

5. The Holiday-Themed Tutorial

Tutorials and how-to videos often trend around the holidays as viewers looks for ways to cook the best turkey, set an attractive table, and host dinner parties. Your business can capitalize on this trend in an entertaining and educational way for your viewers.

Sometimes, it’s as easy as taking a more general video concept, and putting a seasonal spin on it. For instance, we produced a video tutorial on filming food as part of our How To Video series, and gave it a holiday theme by dressing the set and crafting the messaging to evoke seasonal sentiments.

Look for on-brand, seasonal ideas for your own tutorial or how-to video, and you’ll be well on your way to a quick Thanksgiving video.

Bonus: Graphics and Stop Motion

An alternative to each of the video ideas shown above would be highlighting the message you want to spread using graphics or stop motion animation. With the right tools, these types of video can be just as quick as the ones mentioned earlier.

Graphics Video

Instead of using real people and cameras, constructing a graphics video to deliver your message can be just as effective.

The New York Times created a super simple video to this effect. Similar to the “thank you video” or “happy Thanksgiving video” concepts above, the New York Times highlighted what people are thankful for. This, like the other ideas, fit the Thanksgiving theme perfectly.

Just ask everyone in the office to submit their answers, put together an on-brand graphic, and your video will be ready in no time.

Stop Motion Animation

Another captivating style of video you might be able to complete relatively quickly is stop motion animation. Although the shoot requires a certain level of precision, you don’t need to find a location, actors, or anything other than some seasonal objects and a camera. This concept could go one of two ways.

It could be a simple representation like this Thanksgiving video from Pond5. We’d recommend using Thanksgiving-themed elements for your stop motion piece. The message could echo any of the concepts mentioned above.

If you have more resources, you could take inspiration from the video below by Blendtec. This version is admittedly more involved, but a simpler concept would definitely be doable.

You get bonus points with this idea if you can find a unique way to incorporate your product into the video, as Blendtec did with their blenders.

This Earth Day, we’re worried about our planet. It seems as though every year brings news of yet another environmental catastrophe, whether it’s an oil spill, rapidly declining populations of pollinators and frogs, or increasingly extreme weather events brought on by climate change.

Yet, there are signs of hope. More people are conscious of their impact on the environment, and making changes for the better. A large part of why many are finding new motivation to help the environment is video.

Video shines a light on the far-flung reaches of the world, where many people would never travel on their own. It creates a connection with the plight of animals under environmental distress due to habit loss or other factors. And, as a result, it inspires action in a way that few other sources of information can achieve. Keep reading for our thoughts on why video just might save the planet, and steps you can take to help.

Awareness

The first step to solving any problem is awareness that the problem exists in the first place. Video has played a crucial role in highlighting environmental issues that otherwise would not get the attention they deserve.

For example, the Deepwater Horizon oil spill of 2010 was said to be on a scale greater than any other spill in history. But what does that really mean? How would you know how bad it really was if you weren’t there to see it?

There was dramatic video of the disaster unfolding at the surface, but there was also a livestream of thousands of gallons of oil gushing underwater that went on for months. That video feed made sure the catastrophe remained in the public consciousness until its eventual resolution. Footage from the disaster is still used from time to time when offshore drilling is in the news.

It’s easy to see how a serious problem bubbling under the surface could escape public notice. Video played a key role in pressuring officials and BP to solve the oil leak.

Our Planet

More recently, Our Planet, a Netflix special featuring the venerable David Attenborough, was released. A notable theme running through all the beautiful and remarkable footage was human impact on the environment. Hear from Mr. Attenborough why it was important to approach this series differently than past documentaries:

”Nature once determined how we survive. Now we determine how nature survives.” – Sir David Attenborough @OurPlanet @Netflix #ShareOurPlanet #OurPlanet pic.twitter.com/vJw5POVAf2

— World Wildlife Fund (@World_Wildlife) April 12, 2019

As animals face shrinking habitats and the consequences of a rapidly changing climate, they’re often driven into desperate and unusual circumstances. In painful, occasionally controversial moments, this series forced viewers to confront the sad reality many species experience on Earth.

Importantly, as more people viewed Our Planet and reacted to it, the conversation quickly moved to the mainstream. A simple news article about the shrinking habitats of walruses would not have been able to achieve the same reach.

Connection

By giving audiences a front row seat to the perils of environmental destruction, video allows viewers to forge a connection with places, animals, and causes they otherwise would not. The key is the emotions video can trigger for viewers.

For example, many expressed dismay and sadness over scenes in Our Planet on social media:

Me watching a baby flamingo with salt encrusted legs get LEFT BEHIND on #OurPlanet: pic.twitter.com/kaXcFxYMRE

— Taylor Armitage (@taylor_armitage) April 13, 2019

This series cut straight to the heartstrings in many scenes, as other documentaries have done before. As it turns out, emotions play a key role in forming memories. This means audiences are more likely to remember details from provocative documentaries like Our Planet. Keeping environmental issues top of mind for consumers is key to changing their behavior.

Action

By forging an emotional connection with viewers, Our Planet stands a better chance at motivating its audience to take action. There’s even concrete evidence of a so-called “Attenborough Effect.”

David Attenborough is synonymous with powerful, visually stunning nature documentaries. Recently, he’s also been associated with driving environmentally-friendly lifestyle changes amongst consumers.

A study of 3,833 consumers by GlobalWebIndex found the “Attenborough Effect” had led to a 53% drop in single-use plastics over the course of twelve months. Consumers reported greater awareness of the importance of sustainable packaging. They specifically mentioned documentaries like Blue Planet II and Our Planet as impacting their behavior.

This is no accident. Our Planet has a series of videos on its website with additional clips of David Attenborough promoting important environmental initiatives. They are not just hooking viewers with captivating and harrowing imagery, they’re also helping them take action.

So, Can Video Save the Planet?

The truth is, while video can bring greater awareness to environmental issues, and make consumers more likely to change their behavior, no single factor alone can save the Earth. Not even this amazing video from Lil’ Dicky (contains some NSFW language).

We all have to work to change our habits to reduce, reuse, and recycle. More than that, we also have to support organizations that rehabilitate natural habitats and promote environmental welfare at scale.

SproutVideo is a proud sponsor of the National Forest Foundation, a non-profit dedicated to revitalizing forests and planting new trees. This Earth Day, find a cause you care about, and if possible, support a reputable organization that addresses it.

Maybe it’s the warmer weather, maybe it’s the first crocuses poking up through the ground, but all we want to do is head outside and get some fresh air. While we’re at it, we may as well grab some awesome footage of nature in rebirth.

Here are five classic filmmaking techniques you’ll need to capture nature in all her glory.

1. Macro Video

Much of nature’s beauty is really in the details. Whether the subject itself is small, or you just want to zero in on one aspect of it, a macro shot is the way to go.

Getting up close and personal with nature can certainly be challenging. Even if your subject is relatively harmless, it’s unlikely to stay still for long. Stay flexible, and be ready at a second’s notice to grab your shot.

If your subject is a critter of some kind, usually, the eyes are great focal point. Humans naturally seek eye contact, so this tends to be an engaging shot.

Another approach is to take a series of “sum of its parts” shots. Basically, you capture macro video of different parts of an animal, maybe its legs, scales, tail, etc. Then, by showing them in sequence, your viewers can piece it all together.

Even though you’ll be focusing very closely on just one aspect of your subject, you still need to pay attention to the composition of your shot. Your background might be very blurry, but contrasting colors or light can give your macro video a professional look.

How to Film Macro Video

Believe it or not, you can film macro video on just about any camera. The quality will not be quite the same on a phone as on a DSLR. However, you can still achieve reasonably good results. After all, the best camera you have is the one you’ve got!

No matter which camera you’re using, you’ll need a tripod and a light source for optimal results. The tripod will help prevent shakiness from ruining the shot. The light will allow you to properly illuminate your tiny subject at the depth of field required to film a macro video.

Filming Macro Video on a Phone

To capture macro video on a phone, you’ll need a macro lens adapter. The regular lens on a phone can’t focus at the short distances required to produce a macro shot, and the digital zoom introduces too much noise to the picture to get a clear shot.

There are plenty of affordable options for lens adapters out there. The right option depends largely on your budget, and how much macro video you intend to film.

…On a DSLR

For macro shots, DSLR cameras work really well, provided you use the right lens. This is an excellent guide to filming macro video with different DSLR cameras:

The depth of field, interchangeable lenses, and the quality of the image you can attain with a DSLR camera make them a smart choice for this type of filming.

2. Time Lapse

Time lapse video is key for capturing changes over an extended period of time. Since nature moves at its own pace, time lapse video is required to speed up changes that would otherwise be too subtle to notice.

Generally speaking, time lapse video is created by filming a subject for a long time at a very low frame rate (one frame per second or per minute, etc). Usually, the camera is stationary for the duration of the shot, or makes only minor movements.

You can use the same filming technique with a camera in motion to get interesting and unique footage, called a hyperlapse.

Because you are filming for extended periods of time at a very low frame rate, there are important considerations when trying to create a time lapse video.

First of all, you’ll need a lot of battery power since you’ll be filming for a long time. Second, you’ll need a very steady tripod. Third, if you’re filming outside, be aware of changes in the weather for the duration of your shot.

Filming Time Lapse on a Phone

Since the release of iOS8, time lapse video has been available on iPhones. It’s as simple as selecting the time lapse setting in the native camera app.

The amount of time lapse footage you can create with the native camera is limited on iOS to 20-40 seconds. The camera will automatically select the frame rate, and reduce the footage down to a set amount of time.

If you’d like more control over the end result, specialized time lapse apps offer more options for the settings used for time lapse footage. For instance, you’ll want to download an app if you want to be able to set the photo interval, frame rate, and image resolution, among other settings.

…On a DSLR

With most DSLR cameras, you’re really taking photographs at set intervals, rather than filming a video. No audio is recorded with the images, so the camera will knit the images together into a silent film when recording is finished.

For the best result, it’s important to set the focus and the exposure manually so the camera settings won’t change over time. Since most DSLR cameras allow you to set up a time lapse shoot for hours at a time, they are a great choice for this type of shot.

For more tips, Nikon has a detailed guide to shooting time lapse video on a DSLR.

3. Night Cameras

Some of the most amazing animals and insects only come out after the sun goes down. Figuring out how to capture them on camera can be quite the challenge.

Filming at night is not only challenging due to the lack of light. Nocturnal creatures tend to be shy, and very well-camouflaged. Bright lights and lots of noise will likely scare them away.

So, your best bet is to determine where you’re most likely to encounter your subject, and practice lots of patience. Camera traps, triggered by motion detectors, are a good option if you can’t stake out your subject.

Filming in the Dark on a Phone

There are apps for both iPhone and Android, but the results tend to be disappointing. A better option is to get a specialized accessory that enables your phone to capture infrared video instead.

Filming on Other Cameras

In previous sections, we specifically talked about how to use DSLRs, but the reality is that they are of little use without a source of light. There are ways to convert a DSLR camera into one capable of capturing infrared images, but it’s unlikely to be worth the hassle.

To capture footage after dark, the best tool for the job is a specialized infrared camera. Infrared cameras work by forming an image based on infrared radiation, which enables them to work in extreme low light settings.

Even better, most of the commercially available options are designed specifically for the great outdoors. These rugged cameras are waterproof, making them perfectly suited for the job.

4. Slow Motion

Sometimes, you need to really slow things down in order to get a better look. Slow motion is perfect for capturing animals flying, running, leaping, or hopping. Even water droplets become more dramatic in slow motion because this filming technique allows you to appreciate every single movement in precious detail.

Slow motion video is made possible by capturing footage at a really high frame rate, then playing the video at a much lower frame rate. For instance, filming at 120 frames per second, and playing the footage back at 30 fps will result in a video slowed down by a factor of 4.

Filming Slow Motion on a Phone

The native camera apps on most Android devices and iOS handle slow motion very well. Both support up to 240 fps, resulting in buttery smooth slow motion playback.

Just select the “slo-mo” option within the app before you hit record, and you’re good to go.

Filming Slow Motion on a DSLR

Not that long ago, cameras that could film slow motion were incredibly expensive. Now, most DSLRs can handle the job with ease.

Select a higher frame rate (usually 60p or 120p) and record your footage. Some cameras might have a slow motion setting to take the guesswork out of it.

When you’re editing the footage, you’ll want to use a timeline with a standard 24p or 30 fps setting. Then, when you drop the footage natively into your timeline, it will appear to slow it down by spreading the frames out over time. For example, one second of 60 fps footage will occupy two seconds on a 30 fps timeline, so it will playback 50% slower.

5. Under Water

Normally, we would strictly advise against getting your expensive camera gear anywhere near a body of water. Still, some of the most amazing creatures can’t be found anywhere else.

To get a good shot underwater, make sure the water is clear, and pick a sunny day. Naturally, fish, turtles, and other charismatic sea creatures make wonderful subjects.

Depending on the body of water you’re in, you might be fighting currents when trying to get a smooth shot. Train your camera on your subject for slightly extended periods of time, and hold it close to your body to help keep it steady.

The same principles apply to filmmaking underwater just as they do on dry land. Frame your subjects in wide establishing shots, come in for a close up (if you can), and try other angles. A variety of shots will keep it interesting.

Usually, capturing sound underwater is simply underwhelming. You’re listening to scuba gear bubbling away, or waves pushing sand around.

Sometimes, those are the sounds you’re going for. Often, you’ll want to consider adding another option in post production for audio, such as music, a narration, or both.

Filming Underwater with a Phone

Waterproof cases aren’t just a good idea for your clumsy friends. The truly waterproof options also make it possible to take your phone underwater intentionally.

Naturally, you’ll want to do careful research on the right case for your specific phone, backup your phone, and do a couple test runs first.

Even the best case won’t tolerate really low depths, so stick to shallow waters for safety’s sake.

…On a DSLR

Although not for the faint of heart, it’s possible to take your DSLR camera underwater. In fact, one of the best solutions we’ve seen comes from Outex. Their cases are specifically designed to protect your gear underwater while still enabling you to easily manipulate the camera settings.

For an even more in-depth guide, Untamed Science has you covered on all the ins and outs of filming underwater.

We are in the thick of the holiday season, and as usual, emotions are running high. Whether it’s stress, joy, comfort, or nostalgia, it can feel like a bit of a rollercoaster.

As it turns out, almost all of these emotions are reflected in this year’s crop of holiday car commercials. Not content to show off a shiny car with a bow on it, different manufacturers tested out different holiday emotions to see which might strike a chord with viewers.

In this post, we discuss why this approach might work, and look at the range of emotions being explored in these ads. We’ll wrap it up in a neat package with key takeaways for your next video campaign.

Why Emotions Work

Emotions are key to motivating viewers to take an action, whether it’s share, comment, or buy. It doesn’t really matter what time of year it is.

The holidays are a particularly emotionally charged time of year. It’s no wonder so many marketers try to tap into those holiday feelings.

Video marketing is the most effective way to do that. Why? Because video allows you to tell stories with heightened drama and emotional cues.

Unlike writing, there is no need to spend a lot of time addressing every important detail because that is done via context in videos. This context is found in every detail of your video: the people you feature, the music and sound effects you use, the background scenery, etc.

We looked at car commercials for this particular analysis of holiday emotions in video because these manufacturers have big budgets to play with, and big ticket items to sell. How did they try to stand out in a crowded market? Did it work?

Let’s break it down!

1. Stress

Stress. It’s normal, and everyone is familiar with the holiday variety. What should you get your mother-in-law? How are you going to fit 27 people at your dining room table for dinner? Where can you find the season’s hottest toy for little Chelsea? What can you get your grandpa, the man who has everything? Oh, and how are you going to pay for all of this?!

It may be the hap-happiest season of all. But, it doesn’t come without a little (or a lot) of extra stress for most people.

Audi exploits this fact of life in its very funny 2017 holiday ad. In the commercial, two ordinary men driving Audis pull into the parking lot of their local mall. Everything is normal… until an all-out competition ignites for a parking spot.

The driving scenes (going fast, making quick stops, turning tight corners, etc.) are the brand’s opportunity to show off the car’s abilities. Even though most drivers are much more cautious in tight quarters, it sure looks like fun.

There are more subtle cues to let you know that these cars are exceptional. When the drivers take a leap of faith of the ramp to a nearly vacant lot, the brand shows us that Audi is separate from the rest (of the cars) and its drivers end up on top (of the parking deck).

Why it Works

Stress just might be the most relatable emotion associated with the holidays. Whether it’s end-of-year reporting, the holiday party circuit, or last minute gift shopping, nearly everyone experiences some level of stress during the holidays.

By tapping into this common human experience, Audi prompts viewers to picture themselves as the driver behind the wheel. After all, wouldn’t your holiday errands be a lot more fun if you could whip around the turns like that?

2. Joy

Quick! What three-letter word do you think of when you think of the holidays? J-O-Y!

In these humorous spots, Lexus showcases the childlike joy and wonderment the holidays evoke. Yes, they are silly. But, they are also charming.

Part of the fun of the holidays is feeling like a kid again. With all the parties and gifts, it’s hard not to get excited around this time of year.

Why it Works

By featuring a child, the ad captures the viewer’s attention because we’re wondering, “Why is this cute little boy, with amazing dance moves, so excited about this car?” When a woman interrupts him to ask, “Happy?” we realize we just witnessed his inner child celebrating the gift. Ah, ok – that makes more sense!

Most viewers also have an inner child that would jump for joy if offered such a gift. The car maker went with this particular angle on the holidays not once or twice, but three times!

Clearly, they believe that no matter their demographic, their potential customer has an inner child just as excited about the prospect of a brand new Lexus for Christmas as those in their ads.

3. Comfort

Compared to our last two examples, Toyota’s 2017 holiday ad is much more of a tearjerker. In just 30 seconds, the ad manages to tell an emotional story of family and friends welcoming a soldier home from deployment for the holidays.

Why it Works

Further differentiating itself from the other holiday car commercials, Toyota keeps the focus on the people in the ad, rather than the features of its cars.

This type of heartwarming message is a tried and true approach in holiday advertising, and Toyota does a great job of it with this ad.

4. Nostalgia

What are the holidays for if not for feeling nostalgic and sentimental? Toyota really doubled down on a trip down memory lane in their charming and whimsical holiday spot.

One of the longer ads in our series of examples, Toyota tells a wonderful story about a very special gift. It definitely tugs at the heartstrings, and helps remind us of what the season is all about.

Why it Works

Storytelling is one of the most effective ways to deliver a subtle marketing message. This ad is no exception. Toyota’s cars and trucks barely feature in the spot, but are an important subtext to the main message.

Because the central message is around family, nostalgia, and thoughtful gifts, the fact that Toyota’s cars and trucks are playing a supporting role is highly palatable. They stand out just enough to make sure viewers know the brand has a part to play in this emotional story.

The ad ends with the family gathered around the overflowing table and the words “Let’s bring everyone closer this holiday” written across the screen. And with that happy ending, we can now equate Toyota pickups with aspirational, wholesome holiday family moments. Brava, Toyota, brava.

Takeaways

To wrap it up, let’s review the takeaways from these emotional holiday marketing videos. Use these tips for your own videos, holiday or otherwise:

Audi: Even if it’s over something “negative” like holiday stress and frustration, authentically relating with your audience will go a long way. In fact, connecting with them on something like this can be even more effective than focusing only on “positive” emotions because a lot of brands aren’t willing to try it.

Lexus: Appealing to joy is a surefire win, especially when you use precocious kids to make your point. Another important lesson? If you can segment your audience to deliver a video experience that will uniquely speak to each segmentation, do it!

Chevrolet: Make your ads feel personal. The more your audience feels they can connect with you, the more likely they are to feel they can trust you (and want to spend money with you).

Toyota: Once you’ve determined your video strategy, don’t be afraid to take a deep dive into it. Really go for it, even if it does get a bit over-the-top. Just make sure your service and products live up to the aspirational tone you’re setting for viewers.

The end of 2016 is upon us, and what a year it was! Tumultuous at times, 2016 saw lots of ups and downs. The world of online video is no exception.

From provocative live video streams, to innovative uses for 360 video and virtual reality, 2016 offered a lot of surprising moments.

But, we believe the best is yet to come. To help you hit the ground running in the New Year, here are our top ten predictions for the continuing evolution of online video in 2017.

1. Branded Content You’ll Actually Enjoy

A trend that has been building for a while, we think branded content will continue to get better and better. As some standout examples have made clear, it’s nearly at the point where you might not realize, or care, that what you’re watching is sponsored by a brand.

For example, this video by Burberry is intended to build their brand and to reach new audiences through word-of-mouth. But, it’s also highly entertaining, beautifully filmed, and totally worth watching.

We think (and hope) we’ll continue to see more brands invest heavily in creative content people actually want to watch. This could potentially extend to full-length films, too.

2. Flash Will Persist (Barely)

Believe it or not, Flash still isn’t dead. It’s demise has been predicted for quite some time now, and is likely inevitable.

However, unless you have any bright ideas for ways to get everyone using a legacy browser or operating system to suddenly upgrade to modern versions, Flash will still be required for those people to consume certain types of content.

Of course, Flash is only necessary in increasingly narrow circumstances. Already, the vast majority of video we deliver through our platform uses our HTML5 video player. But, we still don’t see Flash going away completely in 2017.

3. Quality Will Continue to Improve

With the advent of 4K capable smartphones, and the ubiquitousness of UltraHD TVs and retina displays, consumer expectations for video quality were really high in 2016.

Video producers are mindful of that. Many already made the shift to 4K or 8K workflows. However, expensive hardware upgrades are usually required for that type of shift, so it’s been uneven at best. For instance, SproutVideo currently supports up to 8K video for playback, but we rarely see it uploaded to our platform.

As more consumer-friendly options enter the market for higher quality workflows, we expect to see better quality across the board.

4. Personalization Will Heat Up

Towards the end of 2016, the trend towards personalization of video content started to pick up momentum. Held back by complex, time-consuming workflows, we expect to see innovation and investment around tools that make it easier to produce videos intended for specific individuals at scale.

Why? Because they are highly effective. Whether it’s content directed at a specific subset of your target audience, or literally individual viewers, personalization drives engagement.

5. Live Video Controversies Will Intensify

Over the course of 2016, several controversies over live video erupted. Sadly, many were tied to instances of violence.

As support for live video continues to expand across different platforms, we’re only going to see more and more of it. Consequently, the chances that it will cause controversy are only going to increase.

Also, it’s not clear exactly how privacy will be handled when it comes to live video, if at all. If you were on TV or interviewed by a news channel, you’d sign a waiver or consent form allowing them to use your image. Because it’s so decentralized, no such arrangement exists with live video online.

We expect the volume and intensity of controversies related to live video to increase in 2017. We are hopeful that progress will begin to be made on related privacy matters.

6. Virtual Reality Might Break Through

Virtual reality got a lot of attention during 2016, and deservedly so. It seems to hold a lot of promise for certain applications, like video games or training purposes.

Then again, it might never realize its potential. Virtual reality faces serious obstacles to becoming a mainstream activity.

First, the cost to produce and obtain virtual reality content and hardware is expensive.

Second, the human body struggles to orient itself in virtual environments, causing nausea and vertigo, among other problems.

The above activity would clearly be a terrible idea.

Finally, it’s currently a very isolated experience. If VR is going to be used for mainstream entertainment activities, and compete against other content, it will have to somehow become social.

7. Social Platforms Producing Original Online Video

In 2017, you won’t just see content from other websites popup in your newsfeed. You’ll see original content produced or sponsored by those platforms themselves.

Facebook just announced a plan to invest in online video series to kick start their video efforts. Similarly, Disney is producing a spin off of The Bachelor for Snapchat. Expect to see much more of this as other platforms get in on the game, especially if these early initiatives are a success.

8. Fewer Ads, More Sponsored Content

Related to the first point, we think the volume of ads you encounter when watching online video might actually decrease. Platforms and and content creators are fighting a war with ad blockers and ad skippers, and dealing with bad data on video ad performance. At some point, a different tact is warranted.

We believe that as more brands get involved in making great video content that people actually want to watch, the need to produce blatantly advertising material will diminish. We also very much look forward to the realization of this trend in particular.

9. More In-House Production

As companies have come to realize the ROI of video, as well as the important role it plays in internal communications, more and more will move video production in-house. It’s the easiest way to increase the amount of video you’re producing, and to maintain consistent quality and branding over time.

A boon for videographers seeking full-time employment, this trend will greatly increase the volume and efficiency with which companies produce content.

10. You’ll Watch Even More Video

Whether you like it or not, chances are you’ll wind up watching even more online video next year than last.

This is guaranteed to happen partly because there will simply be more of it. Video will be more ubiquitous than before, as more and more platforms start pushing it and competing for your attention.

Another factor is that you’re probably going to want to watch more of it. As quality increases, you’ll be more entertained than ever before. Sure, you have to sleep sometime, but we think you’ll do so only after binging on even more online video.
